First things first; if you follow me anywhere else, you know that I’ve already shared this link a thousand times, but I have to share it again for two reasons. 1) I am already super honored to be blogging for Hyphen. 2) I have been reading and have respected Asian American journalist Hua Hsu forever. Yesterday, my Hyphen editors informed me that Hua Hsu had cited one of my Hyphen posts in a post about Charlie Chan in THE ATLANTIC. I squealed with glee when I first read it, and have been giddy ever since. And no, I’m not quite over it yet, but I will move onto other topics anyhow.
Huz and I finally watched Inception yesterday. Huz wasn’t on the schedule and since Hugga would be at preschool all day, I decided to take a day off. The movie was incredible and that Joseph Gordon Levitt was a cutie, but it was pretty amazing just to get to watch a movie with my hubby in the middle of the day without having to orchestrate a huge babysitting production. Of course I got a message from the preschool just ten minutes before the end of the movie about Hugga being warm and out of sorts after her nap, which of course had me worried, but it was nice while it lasted, you know?
It turns out it wasn’t a big deal — she had a slight fever and was grumpy but when we went to pick her up she was still holding up okay. Sitting in a chair and singing with the other kids. I caught up with the director (a total sweetheart) outside and said she called me just to give me the heads up, so I wouldn’t be surprised or pissed when I got there, which I’m glad she did.
It aches a little, and sometimes I think about going back to short preschool days in September just so I could spend more time with her. But if I’m being honest with myself, all-day preschool has been good for both of us. She’s been great with all the other kids, finding other talents (painting with a paintbrush, for one), and she’s the teacher’s helper at school. At home I’ve had space to concentrate and get things done in a shorter amount of time. I’ve been a lot less stressed and more able to stay on top of my day job, my school work, and the house work. So when I go to pick up Hugga in the afternoon, I’m able to completely focus on her for the rest of the day.
Anyhoo, I’m keeping her home today to give her a chance to recover and hang out with Mommy. Might head down to the art store for lunch to finally get Hugga her own paint brush set and some tempera paints. Life is good.
